Commissioned by Adolph Hitler in 1933, Dr Ferdinand Porsche designed the original Beetle to appeal to German citizens at a cost of less than 5 Marks per day.

The original German-use Volkswagen had only 25 hp!

In 1967, Volkswagen introduced it first "12-volt" electrical system -- and the engine produced 53-hp. Top speed of the '67 was estimated at 82 mph.

Volkswagen's air-cooled engines were used to power ski lifts in Australia.

Volkswagen produced over 22 million Beetles from 1938 to 2003.
